Yard Operations Are Becoming the Next Major Warehouse Visibility Challenge

Warehouse operators have spent years improving inventory visibility inside their facilities. Barcode scanning, warehouse management systems and automation platforms have dramatically increased control over what happens within the four walls. Outside the building, however, the picture is often less clear.
Trailers arrive without accurate status updates. Yard inventories fall out of sync with operational reality. Dock schedules change faster than teams can communicate. As a result, some of the most expensive delays in modern distribution networks now originate in the yard rather than inside the warehouse itself.
For many operators, improving warehouse performance increasingly means improving visibility and coordination across trailer movements, yard activity and dock operations.
The yard remains one of the least connected environments
While transportation and warehouse execution have received significant technology investment, yard operations have historically lagged behind.
Many facilities still rely on spreadsheets, radio communication, phone calls and manual yard checks to manage trailer activity. That approach becomes increasingly difficult as freight volumes grow and carrier schedules become more dynamic.
In a written response to Warehouse Insider, Austin Percifull, Global Key Account Manager at Körber Business Area Supply Chain, said warehouse congestion often stems from poor coordination rather than excessive freight volumes.
“From a labor and congestion standpoint, most dock pain comes from clustering, not total volume.”

That distinction matters because it shifts the focus from capacity expansion to operational synchronization. According to MHI's annual industry report, visibility and real-time operational intelligence remain among the highest priorities for supply chain leaders. At the same time, warehouse operators continue searching for ways to improve throughput without significantly increasing labour or facility size.
Companies such as Manhattan Associates, Blue Yonder and Softeon have expanded investments in Yard Management Systems as customers seek greater control over trailer movements and dock scheduling.
Disconnected systems create operational blind spots
The challenge is rarely a lack of information.
Transportation teams have one view of operations. Warehouse teams have another. Carriers often work from separate systems entirely. Valuable data exists, but it remains fragmented.
That fragmentation creates delays, duplicate work and slower decision-making.
The issue extends beyond technology. It also reflects how organisations are structured.
Different teams often optimise for different objectives. Transportation focuses on carrier performance. Warehousing focuses on dock utilisation. Inventory teams focus on product availability.
Without coordination, local optimisation can create broader operational problems.
Visibility only creates value when it supports action
The next stage of yard management is moving beyond visibility towards coordinated execution. Organisations increasingly want systems capable of connecting yard activity, transportation schedules and warehouse operations through a single operational view.
In a written response to Warehouse Insider, Gonzalo Benedit of Aera Technology highlighted the challenge facing many organisations.
“Organizations continue to operate in silos that are not truly connected. The question is how do you make sure that whatever action you take is the right action for the broader interest of the company, not just one function.”
That observation applies directly to modern yard operations. A trailer arriving at the wrong time affects dock schedules. Dock schedules affect labour allocation. Labour allocation affects warehouse throughput. What appears to be a transportation issue quickly becomes a warehouse issue.
As distribution centres continue to process higher freight volumes and tighter delivery schedules, the yard is becoming too important to manage as a separate function. The facilities achieving the strongest performance improvements are increasingly treating yard operations, transportation and warehouse execution as part of the same coordinated system.
