Warehouse Automation Is Moving Closer to the Point of Work

Warehouse operators have spent years investing in automation, analytics and visibility platforms. Yet many facilities still depend on workers to perform routine data collection tasks that slow execution and introduce avoidable errors.

A barcode is scanned manually. An inventory count is updated after the task is complete. A discrepancy is identified only after it creates a downstream problem. These delays may seem minor individually, but at scale they can affect throughput, labour productivity and inventory accuracy across an entire operation. As warehouses process growing order volumes with limited labour availability, attention is increasingly shifting toward technologies that capture data automatically and trigger actions immediately at the point of work.

The greatest gains are happening on the warehouse floor

Many automation projects focus on planning systems, dashboards or reporting tools. However, some of the most measurable operational improvements are emerging much closer to frontline activity.

In a written response to Warehouse Insider, Andre Luecht, Global Strategy Lead for Transport and Logistics at Zebra Technologies, said organisations achieve the strongest results when automation is embedded directly into daily workflows.

“In our customer deployments, we see the most successful conversion of real-time data capture into automated action at the edge of the enterprise. This is where the work gets done.”

Luecht pointed to applications including RFID-enabled cycle counting, wearable technologies and automated scanning systems that remove repetitive manual steps from warehouse processes.

The operational impact can be significant. According to Zebra Technologies' Warehousing Vision Study, warehouse operators continue to prioritise technologies that improve workforce productivity and inventory accuracy. Meanwhile, research from Gartner has consistently identified real-time visibility and execution automation as key drivers of warehouse performance improvements. Companies including Honeywell, ProGlove and Datalogic are also expanding investments in technologies designed to automate data capture directly within operational workflows.

Automation is becoming more practical

Many warehouse operators once viewed automation as a large-scale transformation project requiring major infrastructure investments. That perception is changing.

A growing number of solutions target specific operational bottlenecks rather than entire facilities. Automated barcode capture, wearable devices and machine vision systems can often be deployed incrementally while integrating with existing warehouse processes.

These technologies also help address one of the industry's most persistent challenges: balancing productivity with labour availability.

By reducing repetitive scanning and manual verification activities, warehouse teams can spend more time on higher-value work while maintaining greater operational consistency.

The challenge is no longer collecting data

As more devices, sensors and automated systems are deployed, another issue is becoming increasingly visible. Many organisations can now collect more information than their existing systems are designed to process effectively.

Luecht said backend integration remains one of the biggest obstacles to scaling automation.

“The data still struggles to support automation reliably when the backend systems are not equipped to handle the richness of the data we can now capture.”

That challenge is influencing how warehouse leaders approach future investments. Rather than replacing entire technology stacks, many organisations are focusing on API-based integration strategies that allow new automation capabilities to coexist with existing WMS and ERP environments.

The broader trend is clear. Warehouse automation is becoming less about replacing workers and more about removing friction from everyday execution. Facilities that successfully connect frontline data capture with real-time operational action are likely to see the fastest gains in productivity, accuracy and throughput.
